G governor howl

I have a G with a nasty howl in the governor. Slid fanshaft way ahead so it wasn't turning and the howl stopped. I also greased bearing on end of fanshaft so am sure thats not it. Reinstalled fanshaft and loosened governor plate by flywheel some, didn't help. Am I going to have to replace both gears or could it be anything else inside governor?

Could be the bearings inside the governor. I had the same howling in my 49 B. Deere still has them. Wasn"t too bad a job to replace.

It sounds like the fanshaft may be the cause of the howl. The bearings in mine were shot and it made alot of noise.

I'd say the fan shaft gears aren't meshing correctly. Did you have the governor a part? The fan shaft has to have the correct shims (gaskets) in between the fan shaft and governor housing to set the depth the gears mesh. If you had it a part and put a new gasket in, the gears aren't running in there original wear pattern and are now making noise.
Is this your wide front G, or one of the "twins"?

I had the fanshaft slid out 1/4" and it still howled the same. Shouldnt that much have changed how much the gears meshed????!!!! When I had it all the way out so it did not turn at all, howling stopped. Guy here says I need to shim fanshaft and flywheel side plate to get it to stop, but even after fanshaft still howled when out a whole 1/4"?? I greased the snot out of fron of it, but could it still howl like that?

With the fan shaft out only 1/4 the gears were still meshing, not running at the correct depth with each other.
The flywheel side cover has to be shimmed also so the gov gear and cam gear run in their "sweet spot"
Don't you have a service manual?????
What is that 800 number again....

I tried to call some carb. shop and stroking service, but them backwoods guys don't have a number posted! How do they think they'll get any business that way??

Wont get much for answers about engines, but they have some cool merchandise! You of all people should know you cant get cell phone service out in the woods.

Greasing the fanshaft up front won't cure the back bearing. Still bettin the rear fanshaft bearing is the culprit.
