Gasoline question

For those running old gas tractors, do you use additives because the only gas I can get is unleaded. Thanks!

I have been running old tractor now since 1980 and I buy the cheapest gas I can and have yet to add any thing to the gas other then once in a while a bit of ATF so as to clean things up and work as an upper engine lube

We can still find the old type gas(no ethanol) at a couple dealers. It's
about 40 cent higher. I use it in 2 cycles weed eaters-saw etc. I run
regular gas in all my old tractors. Don't run(shows) them a lot but
hadn't had any problem.

I have been told by several mechanics that you should not run ethanol gas in carborated engines. So I by only non ethanol for all my lawn equipment and my gas Massey 135. The Ethanol in older engines from what I am told causes seals to break down in the fuel system. Not sure about that but I know the ethanol can cause build up if it is left in the fuel system for long periods. The lead in the old gas was a lubricator, If I buy fuel with ethanol then I add an additive like Marvel Mystery Oil, Stabil, or Lucas Oil it helps keep the ethanol from evaporating so fast and lubricates the system. Just my 2 cents on the subject.

Yep it does help a good bit and removes carbon build up and lubes the upper parts in the engine and oh by the way it works like MMO does at half the cost LOL

If you have the new valve guides and you should, you do not want to add a lead additive, if that is the question you are asking,

I bought this additive for my old TO35 that had the newer valve guides, this fuel caused the valves to seize in the guides

Just use non ethanol gas and maybe stay bil or some such fuel conditioner

First, you do not need any 'additives' especially lead, to put in your gas tanks on these low compression engines. Secondly, LEAD has been banned for years now by the EPA and it is illegal to sell it other than in batteries. So any product claiming to be a gas lead additive is Bull Sheet. Next, back in the day,farmers would run whatever was handy in their machines -kerosene, gasoline, Maybelline, ethanol, alcohol, moonshine, et al. Premium Gas sold then was called ETYHYL, short for??? At lot depends on the problem. If just doing the adding to help lube and clean 3-5 gal of gas to 1 quart of ATF. More if your having sticking valve problems or heavy carbon build up as in 1 quart to 2 gal of gas

I agree. Have been running gas engines on combines and tractors on unleaded gas and 15 percent ethanol for years with never a problem. Even use it in 2 stroke engines. Any gas engine vehicle stored for the winter goes in the shed with a full tank of ethanol gas to dispel any condensation. Ben

Back when premium or ethyl gas was readily available, I just don't remember too many ethanol plants in operation, at least compared to today.

The ETHYL was tetra-ethyl lead additive, tp prevent knocking. Not ethanol.

ivor from uk here and while reading this post I had an idea and that is what would happen if a small amount of 2 stroke oil was added to the gasoline

I support the use of MMM marvel mystery oil, it has save me from a motor tear down,

I had tried everything to stop a sticking valve in a new long block motor I had installed in a Jeep, nothing worked,
The old guy at NAPA told me try mmm, if that does not work call the mechanic,

I put 1/2 qt. in fuel tank, 1/2 qt. In motor oil, started engine it was hammering away as the valve was stuck, but in 30 seconds the noise started
going away until it was gone, I never had any more problems, each time I change oil in the old Jeep, it gets another qt of mmm no reason to
take a chance,

The "ethyl" in Ethyl gasoline was a combination of tetraethyl lead additives and ethylene dibromide as anti-knock compounds. It wasn't ethanol!

1 quart of ATF will do the same thing as the MMO does and cost you about 50% less it just will not smell as good LOL
