Gator 6x4, carb issue or something else?

Gentlemen,

It has been awhile. I hope everyone and their family is doing well.

The Gator 6x4 will start fine and runs ok when it is about 1/2 throttle, but anything up to 3/4 & WOT it really starts to bog down...when i let off to 1/2 again, it starts to level off again and run ok.

Does anyone have an idea of what I should check or do? It is 1998 model that is used on weekends at best and keep in good running order.

If you have any questions, pls let me know.

Thank you very much,

Three basics elements that make them run and make power.

Spark (checking the timing, spark plug gap, etc.)

Gas (is there a restiction in the tank, line, gas filter, carb? Is it drawing a vacuum on the tank due to cap not venting?)

Air (is the air intake restricted at any point?)

Next we get in to issues like proper compression, valves, etc.

All a carb does is meter the proper amount of fuel to mix with air. Many times the issues are not the carb, but start there to elimiante it.

Spark (checking the timing, spark plug gap, etc.) I put in new spark plugs and set the gap per spec - did not ck timing

Gas (is there a restiction in the tank, line, gas filter, carb? Is it drawing a vacuum on the tank due to cap not venting?) I will get a new fuel filter and eliminate that issue. - the Gas Cap states "Not a Vented Cap". It is the orig JD gas cap. I do have JD LA120 riding lawn mower and the vented gas gap was plugged and it would run for about 4-5 min then shut off, so I know the drill. I might get a carb replacement kit and try that as well, but after replacing the fuel filter to see what that does.

Air (is the air intake restricted at any point?) I will also replace the air-filter as well...it is super hot and dusty in TX right now..maybe it is not running because it has been 100+ degrees for the last 18 days straight.

Next we get in to issues like proper compression, valves, etc. If all the above does not check out, then I will do a compression ck - hot it gets fixed before this.

Thank you 730d, appreciate the follow-up,

I would take out the screen in the end off the muffler and make sure it is not plugged with carbon. I have seen this happen before, and once the screen is removed or cleaned, engine revvs up fine. The screen can be cleaned by heating with a small torch and brushing off with a wire brush...Scott

Thx Barry - How far is that screen up the muffler? Do you have a preferred method or tool to access/pull out the screen?

Thank you very much,
tstex
