What weight gear lube was used in the early 40s tractors? The stuff that I have drained for mine is supper thick.
 
Right hand page has the info on it, I use modern 80w-90
It is probably super thick because it is super old

Most used 90W gear oil, which is the same viscosity as 40W - 50W motor oil.

Viscosity - gear oil ratings compared to engine oil:

75W gear oil = 10W to 15W motor oil, 80W gear oil = 20W to 30W motor oil, 90W gear oil = 40W to 50W motor oil.
