Have asked this question before but have so far not received a satisfactory answer
I'm unable to get the tractor in the following gears 3 5 7 and 8 I've installed new linkage from gear box to shifter without positive end result.Next step is to split the tractor and look at the gear selector How much work is to split the tractor and where to split it at the clutch or at the transmission and is it easy to do the inside of the transmission

Your high range sychronizer is out, it's located on the top shaft. you will need to split it between the clutch housing and the transmission case, remove the rockshaft, transmission pump front guill and top shifters, you may as well rebuild the complete top shaft, trans. pump and all, I just did one last month it cost $3,000 for the parts, $1200 labor

I still remember how much "FUN" it was to get all 4 balls(A4742R) and springs(R59860) inside the syncronizer(R31028). Does this kit(RE227995 SYNCHRONIZER, REPAIR KIT ADD 1,512.00 USD) still have these balls? I know parts doesn't list any.

There is a tool used to get the balls and springs into place. Without the tool it is almost impossible to get them into place.

Yes, they are still used. I did have a cone to install them, but I haven't seen it for several years,,so I put them in with a bit of grease and a flat screw driver..I keep some extras in case one flies over my shoulder..The balls in the newer 4430 kits are a bit larger..but just as ornery..

Thanks but after my tour of duty being a JD "service center" manager for 10 yrs and a dealer service manager for several yrs I'm aware of the OTC "cone shaped" tool. Even with the tool it's not easy to assemble the complete syncronizer for the inexperienced technician.

By the sounds of it might be more then I bargen for.So I will try to sell it,will inform the new owner about the gears that don"t work anymore.
Thanks for all your input

When I did my 4320 syncronizer I took the part with the balls in it to my dealer and myself and two techs worked on it for 20 min before they gave up.
I came home and guessed at the shape of the cone tool and made one in the lathe in 30 min and then took less than two min to put all the balls in. Click.
