As I have said most modern UTF oils are rated at 10w30 viscosity waaayyy thinner than 80W90 that's why its great at informing you of a worn lift cylinder (in my opinion). Depending on temp, location and preference.. UTF is usually a better choice (not slamming on gear oil) if you live in Canada or anwhere with winter and use the machine in winter UTF is the way to go, but if it's only doing summer work 80W90 gear oil should suffice. both oils in the end do the same thing, they lubricate the transmission and diffy and they work your hydraulics.

Traditional SAE 80W90 gear oil is designed for splash lubricated transissions and final drives. It has a much lower viscosity index (~100) making it a poor choice for hydraulic systems.

Also Hokie, 80W90 seems to work worn N series hydraulic systems better due to its thickness, because it doesn't leak past moderetley worn lift cylinder rings. (just thought I'd put that out there)

TJ64 if you listen to anybody here let it be TheOldHokie, he is the forum expert on hydraulics (if you haven't noticed yet)

I am not going to engage in that "thicker is better because it leaks less" argument - its been beaten to death.

I also hate miss-using SAE viscodity grades. Lets stick to real measures to get good comparisons.

Most UTF has a KV100 viscosity of 9.5 cSt, KV40 of 55 cSt, and viscosity index of 135.

Typical SAE 80W90 has a KV100 of 14 cSt, KV40 of 130, and viscosity index of 100.

That paints a pretty clear picture. The gear oil is like molasses when cold but not much thicker than a UTF when hot.

How did you get it for $29? I check w/the local & Sale price is $39.99.
I didn't buy it, I was looking at it. It has a sale price sticker on it. I bought the 80-90 traveler because I still had about a gallon in the tractor. I didn't pull the PTO to replace the over psi valve in my pump. I worked thru the top and side, no fancy wrenches, just box end.

Tractor had a gallon of 80-90 still in it so that is what I added. I will change it again before September. At that time I will wash it all out with diesel or mineral spirits and fill with UTF. Thank you for your insights.
