Gehl 4500 Skidsteer

Ted in minn

My 4500 skidsteer has a motor with problems. right now it is not running, but when it was running it needed a valve job.

What other engine might fit in this machine?

How difficult is it to modify the various connections from the engine to the machine?

I was thinking of a small diesel engine. Any advice will appreciated.

That Ford engine was used in a lot of different things not that hard to find a rebuilt on or a used one. What is wrong with the engine other then a valve job? They used a Ford I-98 KSG engine. Sometimes I think I could but a Kubota Diesel V2203 in one someday been toying with the idea.

The motor started making a knock/rattling sound in what I think was the top end then, after about ten seconds or less, it killed and will not turn over. I am hoping it is a broken valve spring or something like that, but I have not pulled the cover off to look.

I have researched the engine pretty well and know what it is and where to get parts. I have the exploded view parts book and it looks to me that any engine that will fit into the space and has a shaft onto which the drive coupler sprocket can be attached should work. Might need to manufacture motor mounts. The gas engine has motor mounts on each side and one accross the front and the diesel has two motor mounts on each side, both front and back.

Have you looked for a diesel engine yet?

It looks like a pretty simple engine so I intend to pull off the valve cover and perhaps the head and see if I can find the source of that rattle/knock and what is stoppign it from turning over.

If you have any experience with this sort of trouble please share it.

Thanks
