Gehl Forage Harvester value

Hello-

My neighbor is selling an old Gehl FH84 chop-all field harvester with single row corn head. Other than tightening some chains, the machine looks in pretty good shape. Belt that runs the flywheel looks brand new.

Located in central Wisconsin. Looking for a value to start at hir selling the machine. If anyone is interested, I can get you his contact information. Thanks!

Didn't pay much more than scrap for my two & they are operational & complete with better paint. It might bring a little more with the mower bar attachment. The green cut feature seems to bring the price of the old Gehl choppers up at least two-fold.

The lack of replacement blower bands are one thing that inhibit the sales of those. Maybe salvage that if it's good & the belts & chains if they're not too far gone.

I think we sold ours for about 500.00 40 years ago, they don't blow real well filling wagons they do alright but nothing extra for that. and knives need to be sharp and tight to the ledger in it or they will take power fast

It’s a neat old machine but parts aren’t around any more, they were built when corn yielded 75 bu maybe less planted at 19k seeds per acre. Today everyone says they get 200bu an acre and most are planting over 30k seeds an acre. The machine just can’t keep up with modern fodder yields.

Keep in mind they weren't a very good machine when they were new. It appears that the paddles that throw the silage are missing in the pics. If you don't keep the knives really really sharp they took a lot of horse power.

I agree that the value is not much. He should appreciate any offer in the positive from someone who desires to preserve it. Most of them sell for scrap regardless of condition. Seen a really nice IH 55 chopper with both heads bring $150 about 10 years ago. Take inflation into account, $300.
