Genarator question

I have a mutt 8N tractor that I have a question about It has a stationary industrial engine with magneto and 6 volt system. My question is how do I check my generator? I have a volt meter but am not sure how or where to place my positive and negative. I also believe I will need a jumper wire but not sure. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Measure battery + to battery -. Before starting it will be about a volt lower than after running at speed for a couple of minutes. If it rises, it is charging. If not, then it isn't charging.
To help isolate generator/regulator problems, if it isn't charging, jumper the two barrel terminals together & if that makes it begin charging, then generator probably OK & regulator suspect.

If all you are wanting to is to see if the generator is charging the battery, just take our meter and hold the positive lead to the positive post and neg to the negative post. Do it with the tractor not running and you will see battery voltage, do it with it running and if higher around 7 volts, then the generator is working.
or like JMOR says ground the field terminal and see what you get.

If you are not sure just take the generator to a shop and have it tested.
