I know I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, but, why can I buy a 2040 JD with loader cheaper than I can buy a much smaller compact tractor with loader. I need a tractor with loader since I bought the land ajoining mine, and every compact is higher than the larger tractors. Used tractors that is.

The compact tractors are more in demand because contractors and such can transport them easily behind a pickup.

Like Verniee says,higher demand for the compact,BUT,that 2040 wasn't the shining star of the JD utility line. They were made in Manhiem Germany. I believe the 2440 was the only utility of that vintage that was US made. I think you'll find they are a little higher valued.

A guy here in town just got a new farmall utility tractor with 20hp, He said he paid 30,000 for it, its got all the bells and whistls, Heated cab, quik atatch loader, front mount snow blower. he does costom tilling and snow remuval, and has 4 or 5 other tractors about the same size.
My uncle just got a used case skidloader,paid 15,00 for it and it has twice the horsepower, and is more verseitile than a tractor. Sounds like those small utillaty tractors are a ripoff to me.

because there are 100 guys just like you, and only 7-8 of them bother to look at slightly older used tractors; an of those 8 people, 6 of them look only at Ford N used tractors.

So, 'everybody' is looking at new compact tractors or old beat up Ford N tractors.

That leaves you & one other preson looking at other used tractors.

Real farmers want machines 100 hp plus. Hobby farmers want machines 35hp or less.

Big notch in there of really nice tractors that no one is looking at, so you can pick them up a little cheap.

Its simply a different market. Lots of hobby farmers around these days, who have found that the little bitty 4WD utility rigs will do many jobs better than the big ones- like getting into barns to clean stalls, pull a pasture harrow or manure spreader, mow in tight places, etc. If you're doing tillage, making hay, or other more conventional farming tasks, the 2040 is certainly better suited- but far fewer guys doing that anymore, and the market reflects it.

I have been looking at all mfg. for the same thing.. 45-55hp 4wd with loader....look at the utility lines and pay close attention to the very different transmissions.....i like the L5040-GST Kubota or the M5040 Kubota...some of the other utility tractors do not have a sychronized tranny and this means you must stop completely to change gears or you hear a loud grinding noise...

I have a 77 Kubota L285 30 HP with loader I paid $5900 for it about 4 years ago but its still worth that much now. I like it because I can tow it around with my Ford Ranger 160 Hp 4.0 L engine and low ratio rear ends. But like they say you can get a bigger tractor for less with the same options if you look around. My neighbor bought a real nice JD with bucket for less than I did. It just depends on what you want to do with it.
I used to do Roto-tilling for people but the stupid state says I need a Landscaping license to do it around the houses for lawns or anything but a Vegetable garden. They really killed a good part time job for me. $#@$%^%&*^%^%# I hope they get it back in their face when they have to pay a Lanscaper to till their lawn up.

Some of the cheapest priced tractors I see advertised are those BIG 4x4 articulated ones.

I would buy one just for a yard ornamant/toy but they are out west and cost a fortune to have shipped.

Demand is what's driving this as alot of people have 3-10 acres as they split up all the farms.

Well, here is a short background. 152 acres, hay, beef cattle. Got my Granddad's MF35, Dads MF135 still square bailing with Dads old New Holland. I bought a 5000 Ford with loader from the old timer up the road. He bought it new, 1240 hours, always inside, very clean. $3800.00. I don't know how good a deal it was, but I'm happy. He always was helpful till his hips just plain wore out. I replaced the front tires, battery, and changed all the fluids. I really like it the 2 hours I've run it.

A compact tractor is not going to tear up someone's yard like a skid steer will. And a skid steer is the last thing you want to till with. Two totally different machines that only overlap in the loader area.

There have been tremendous advances in joint replacements over the last 10 years. The VA can help and vets should bite the time bullet and schedule an appointment or better yet go to the surgeon and find out who all can pay parts of it.

We have a 4wd 2240 with a westendorf loader and are pushing 11000 hours on it. Bought it new in 82. The little 3 cylinder engin is great for loader work, in low gear you can push into a pile and pull the motor way down and not have to ride the clutch. Motor was rebuilt at 6500 hrs and we replaced the clutch then just because the tractor was split. We look almost every year at trading but cant find anything we would like better. Best tractor JD ever built in our book!!

This goes with my rant a while back on the trailer forum about government running everyone out of business. It gets worse every year. So you have to have a license to run a tiller, that is crud! It really torks me off.

I have a Ford/New Holand 1715 27 HP FWD that I bought three years ago for $8200 with a new 5' Kingkutter Hayside rotery cutter . Weights about 3000lbs with cutter on it . Will pull a set of 10" or 12" plows good. also any thing that can be used on 8n it has no problem with . Can be hualed on 16 ' utility trailer . with a small truck . would recomend brakes on trailer .
