does any one remember , or heard stories about the introduction of generation 2 tractors?
my neighbor said it was in the fall of the year, the local dealer had a ad in the newspaper
about a new tractor promo on a saturday
he went and a tractor was covered in cardboard
after a quick talk by the deere man,
the cardboard was removed,
he said he was really suprised by the looks of it,lot of farmers talked about the cab, and quad range,
and they sold several that day,
any one have any stories to share? or remember the first ones in your area?
thanks

If I remember correctly the first GenII I saw was a model that F.G.Jones in Woolstock showed me.Before the Mega Dealer concept it was one of the largest dealerships in Iowa and I would estimate less than 200 people lived there. His dealership buildings took up a city block and was all of main street on north side. We traded our 4520 and 4320 for a 4630 and 4430 they was so much quieter.

Hey Larry, just curious.....how much cash did you pay on top of the trade? Remember, you dont HAVE to answer the question.....

swindave I think it was in August 1972 maybe September Me and my friend Earl Wayne went to Muskogee OK where they had some of the tractors. Can't remember how many or which ones but they had some price sheet available so I got a coupla. Lynn

In my part of the world which is Montana most of the farming was done with 4 wheel drive tractors so we really didn't get exposed to the 30 series until the 8430/8630 came out. A few locals bought 8630s when they came out and they caused a sensation with the futuristic looking SGB and style compared to the boxy looking cabs of Versatile/Steiger. One of them lived in town and stored his 8630 there so lots of people saw it. Course over time they turned out to be paper tigers but at least they were nice to drive.

Shaler that was 40+ years ago but seems like around $3K each .Hard to believe 4 wheel weights were $122 or 6 fronts about the same.Things are about 10X higher than 70s.Inflation and value of the dollar are the reason but I just sold super nice 4230 5200 actual hours for around $16K.The local dealer wants $80K to roll a one year old combine. We used to do it for $10K but now we run them but still spend $5K just on wear parts.

I see that the heater a nd AC was an option on the sound guard cab. Ac was quite pricey compare to the cab.
I have never seen a cab without them?

Apparently there were several of the SGB tractors sold in Europe without ACs.

I've worked in several without AC (not that it wasn't installed, just that it wasn't working haha), and I'll tell you--it's not fun!
