generator connections?

Which is the ground and which is the field connection. facing the end of the generator with the armator post, the other two connection are one on top, and the other one below it going around the generator. most pictures I've seen is one post on top and the other one beyond it going lenght wise of the generator. Can you take an ohm reading and what would it be, to tell which one is which? Thanks for you help. Seb TN
 
Ditto what Bruce said. inspect both posts on the genny barrel closely.. the field will be insulabted with a hard rubber grommet or a phenolic washer... the ground may have a splined base and be pressed or nut-retained to the shell.

I dropped my generator off at the REbuild shop a week ago. Mine was grounded to the case. The old technician took it back and ground off some of the red paint and each of the terminals were plainly identified, just covered up with old paint. My Ground terminal had been broken off in the past, that is why it was grounded to the case and I didn't even know it was wrong. Maybe sandpaper would help undercover the markings if BillM helps doesn't solve your problem.
