I liked the mood and lighting better but, just take a screw driver or wire and short the batt and arm terminals right at the Voltage regulator. it only takes a spark to do it. that polarizes the generator.

i excite it with key on or off? i 'd think off but not sure

"OFF".

Having the switch "ON" with the engine NOT running risks burning the breakerpoints.

ARM.. ARMATURE.. jumper battery hot post ( or bat tab on vreg ).. to the Generator ARMATURE stud.

off as bob says.. but only to protect ignition points.

genny polerization will not be affected by key state as long as the engine is not running. just have to have a charged battery installed.. etc.
