Generator issues

JD50, 12 volt, positive ground, distributor, genny was working fine but was green, ugh, took it off to paint it black, reinstalled and no juice going to the amp meter, ran a jumper from the genny to a good ground and it started charging, ok should be a simple fix. Cleaned off everything to bare metal including the strap the holds the VR on, polarized it before I started it and now nothing, even when running another jumper wire down to the frame. Getting a solid 12+ volts off the field stud when running and the amp meter shows a discharge when I turn on the lights, didn’t mess with any of that when I took the generator off. Put 12 volts on it when on the bench and it turns , not very fast, but turns. Working though John T’s troubleshoot steps but I’m at a loss. Taped it up good when I painted it, my only thought now is somehow some paint got into the guts, any thoughts would help, thanks

So ammeter terminal to bat terminal on regulator should be farthest forward terminal. Sometimes that wire where it goes up past the fuel tank can get disturbed when moved and the insulation can be all nasty. I’d quick ohm out that wire and to check it should have no resistance and if you unhook it you can see if you have power at the regulator.

It’s a pain in the buns to get that wire through I usually end up with the fuel tank and hood off there’s some metal tabs that hold it in

After testing that that follow your instructions it’s contained between the voltage regulator and the genny there’s good wiring diagrams on this website

"Getting a solid 12+ volts off the field stud when running"

The LOWER the voltage at the field stud the more the generator will charge. Something is amiss in the field wiring or the voltage regulator or the regulator isn't securely grounded.

Did alttle more troubleshooting, the field stud is showing 14.5 volts when running and the arm stud is showing only about 8.5 volts. Nothing getting to the battery since it shows just a tad below 12 volts when running. Will revisit my clean up on the grounds tomorrow and might just take the generator and VR to my local generator guy to make sure something internal isn’t messed up, also will check the resistance of the wire with the ohm meter, fingers crossed that it isn’t the issue. Should have just left it green since it was working fine, ugh

GROUND the field stud to a good ground (which is called "full-fielding" the generator), it should charge at maximum charge, proving the the generator is OK and the issue is field wiring, the VR, or the VR isn't grounded, or the braided ground around the rubber mounts is compromised.

Don't run it "full -fielded for more than a minute or two for testing purposes.

got in one more try before sunset, tried going from the field stud to a good ground, nothing on the amp meter, still showing 14.6 volts coming off the field stud, going to take it to my generator guy, the connection from the genn/ VR to the meter checked ok,

For full output . The field should want the same potential as the generator frame . And 13.8V on the arm post vs the field post .

HOW can the field stud show a potential of 14.6 Volts while at the same time being grounded?

When I grounded the field post I didn’t check the voltage, I meant to say it was showing 14.6 while just running, something with the internals of the generator isn’t right, that’s the only thing I can figure out, I will see what the shop has to say after I drop it off

Update on my generator issues, got it back today and on the tractor, working as it should. The guts were all gunked up, needed a good clean up, thanks for all the advice
