Generator or Alternator?

Well here's one for the books. Seem that I have a, well a great American farm tractor. When the motor was rebuilt some 35 years + ago the tractor company that did the work got a bit inventive. Looks like they did put in a 12 volt battery but either rebuilt the old 6 volt gen. using the old case and turning it into a 12 volt or just left it as a 6 volt. Now I put a new 12 v batt. in a year ago and it has charged and run like a champ until this issue when the thing froze up. After many phone calls I got someone that knew that difference from what I told him about the part. Well all's well that ends well, looks like this is an easy one just put in a 12 volt changer over. Thanks all for the help.

it's not uncommon to rebuild a 6v gen as 12v...

if it locked up sounds like a bearing issue hopefully.. and not a brush/armature issue.

The industry changed from 6v to 12v in the late fifties and from gennys to alternators in the mid sixties , 64 1/2 mustangs came with 12v gennys .So at one time they were very common , ie 35 years ago .

I have a few 12v gennys in the shop . I want to keep my funk with a vintage looking genny and points but I would like to use a common 12v battery .
