Generator output on 850

Hey Fellas... When my 850 is running, I get a 1 volt DC reading right on the lugs on my generator with no wires hooked up. Is this sufficient to keep my 6 volt battery charged? Or, is it time to rebuild?

John:

You cannot test your generator with the connections disconnected.

Hook it back up and check the voltage at the battery with the lights on and the engine running at 1000 RPM or more.

You should read 6.5 V or a bit more.

As Dean said.. with all the lugs disconnected, the VR is not there to power the gennies field and make it generate electricity... and even if the field was hooke dup.. you don't want to measure the armature voltage when there is no load on it.

Deans recomendation of testing battery votlage under laod and high idle is a good one.

You wouldn't turn your main house breaker off then try to see what voltage you are getting out of a wall outlet would you?

To check your genny do as the others have said. Then take a battery voltage reading with the engine not running then start it up and take a 2nd reading. The first reading should be close to 6 volts and the w2nd around 7 volts
