Generator Polarization

Generator light is on and I had the gen tested and rebuilt. Generator light is still on and I believe it needs to be repolarized. Can anyone tell me a an easy way to repolarize the gen? It's hard to get at my regulator with my loader on.

Basically, you touch a wire from your live battery cable to the "A" terminal on the generator. Just a quick touch, a small apark will occur. This is too general but let us know which tractor, 6 volt or 12 volt, positive or negative ground.

If the genny had been at the incorrect polarity, that can damage the Voltage Regulator, try to polarize as posted n see if that helps.

If your tractor is Pos ground but the genny shop polarized the genny for Neg ground and if you failed to correctly polarize before start up, again, the VR may be damaged

Then (after you polarize) when shes running take a jumper wire and momentarily/temporarily ground the gennys FLD post to a good ground. If that makes it charge but it dont charge otherwise, the genny itself is okay and its either a bad voltage regulator or the VR doesnt have a good ground or the wires bad/open from FLD on genny to FLD on the VR.

When it's running ??? Don't sound right to me, however I have been wrong before (1964). Just kidding, but it still don't sound right.

Yep, when its running is the only time the genny is generating, so thats when you dead ground the FLD post to full field it for max output by passing the VR. If it charges then you know the genny is okay (it has to be running to work) so the problem must be the VR or the VR isnt well grounded. Of course, Polarization is BEFORE you start her up, its NOT running then.
