Generator question for John T

I have a 63 3010 Gas tractor.

Is it possible to convert a 24 volt delco generator to work as a 12 volt?

I have successfully coverted 6v to 12v before but wasn"t sure if it was possible to go the other way?

I notice the 24v delco generators seem to have a lower advertised amp output than a similar 12v unit. Usually 10 amps compared to 24 amps.

I ask this because it seems pretty easy to find the 24v units online usually pretty cheap too. It"s hard to beat a NOS generator for $150

Anything is possible, but that $150 generator would cost more than what you need by the time you have it converted.

There are a few 24v, 20 amp generators .They were used on industrial 830 and 840 electric start tractors. On a new generation tractor a Delco alternator does not look out of place . The higher the amperage the better and use a three wire connection. The single wire alternators are for Bubba"s. A 24v 10amp generator develops the same power as a 12V 20 amp generator.

Like B&D says, just put a $50 delco alternator on it.

I guess its "possible" but it would be a Rube Goldberg because the 24 volt genny has 2 seperate armature output leads so one will have to be wired to the input side of the 2 fields (then use the other ARM post like normal) which splice in the middle and then out the regular FLD post which gets its ground via the voltage regulator. It may be hard to match up a 12 volt VR for use with that converted genny SO I JUST CANT HELP YOU THAT MUCH SINCE ITS SUCH A NON STANDARRD CONVERSION. Sure in theory if the VR regulates the field current so as to not exceed the gennys field winding specs it can work and charge at 12 volts but it may take a real genny repair shop to rewire and configure it, I cant over the net.

I think Id use a regular 12 volt genny or else an alternator

I agree it seems like a lot of trouble to do. I had to ask though. I will stick with the factory set up once I can get it charging again.
