Generator Success Story

On this forum from time to time, we attempt to diagnose issues with generators. Sometimes without success. I acquired a 7500-watt Generic portable generator on an on-line auction. Someone and been working on the carb, not a good sign. After I removed and cleaned the carb it would start and run but only for about 30 seconds like it was running out of fuel. I pulled the air cleaner back off and mounted the carb without the air box, and it continued to act in the same manner. The motor was a B&S IC with an oil filter and a pump. I took the bowl off the carb and turned on the fuel and I got good flow. I then disconnected the oil shut off system and the generator ran perfect. I then tested the oil pressure shut-off switch, and it still shown it was grounded with the generator running. I removed the switch and installed an oil gauge; the motor had 20 pounds oil pressure. A new switch is on the way. Evidently the oil pressure shut off system has a timer which allows the motor to start and run a short period before engaging the system. The power head on the generator has power.

I had the same problem with my generator a few years ago. The oil pressure sensor went bad and wouldn't let it keep running after about 10 seconds past starting up. A trip to the auto parts store for a common size oil pressure switch, swapped out the old one, and then started and ran fine.

Congratulations, good troubleshooting! I was given a big old generator last summer, the rpm's wouldn't stabilize. I added a little spring to the governor rod with an adjusting bolt, so I could micro-adjust it. I got it to hold at 59-61 hz regardless of load, that's good enough for me.

I have seen that problem with the oil pressure switch on several generators. Simple to check, just unhook the wire from it and if it starts and runs you have found your problem.

That is why they invented electric head scratchers.

We used to have to overfill the Hondas and clones on the tanker transfer pumps because if they sat at an angle in a field driveway or along a ditch no start because of those switches.

Never wiped out an engine when they inevitably unplugged them either but crankcase always had plenty of oil to start the season. We would loose the pump seal or an impeller 3 times before doing anything but carb work to the engine.
