Getting started on my 411 LP

Hello,
I bought a big 411 on propane 2 years ago and I am finally starting to work on it. The engine was stuck, the first two pistons were the culprits. I had pored some diesel in the cylinders about a year ago to try and free it up, with no luck. The diesel was still in these cylinders.

So far we have taken all the tin off, radiator and fuel tank. The heads are off and the pistons are out. We need to pull the sleeves and do a complete overhaul.

I am being helped by a mechanic, but he is more of an IH guru. I do not have a manual for this, and he would like to read through one before we go much farther. What is the best manual to buy? I have bought a I&T service manual for my DC and was not very impressed. Is there anything better out there?

Thank you,
Martin

Martin,

There is a comprehensive book called Case Dealers Service Manual (particularly for your model tractor) that puts I and T to shame. They come up from time to time on Ebay and possibly this site offers reprints. Not cheap, but well worth the price. Good Luck with your project! Don

I've gotten several of my operator, parts books and service repair manuals on e-bay. I done a 500 6cyl diesel a couple years ago. It was my first and turned out great, doing a complete tractor and engine restore on an SO right now. Dick, OR.

Hi Martin

The I&T service manuals are better than nothing, but not much. They simply don't have the detail necessary for all of the tractors systems that the factory manuals provide.

As others have said, ebay is usually a good source for the factory manuals. They aren't inexpensive, but they are worth the additional cost in my opinion.

Here is an example of the OEM manual for your 400B.

That is a factory re-print (the logos date this copy) of the original manual printed in the 1950s. You may be able to find an early original manual. However, this later version would have all revisions/updates included. - Joe
