Gleaner 4-38 head plugging update

Thought I would report what I found and did based on you alls advice. the grass knive were in good shape, but needed setting up, but i didn't mess with them because it wasn't wrapping. Found the adjustment for the snapping rolls and moved them in and set each one with a set of dividers so they all were the same distance from the side frames. Back in the field this eliminated the ears not snapping off but a week of dry weather had passed so the stalks may have dried more.I think I got the rolls too close together, because the stalks tended to plug abit if I got over 2 1/2 mph. But I think the problem is that the roll segments are worn too smooth.I thought about welding a bead on each one to rough it up abit. Has anyone done that and did it help? Thanks to all who responded. Corns done for another year.

years ago we did that to get us by, no money at the time for replacements, and it helped. You just have to stay away from the bearings or the heat will cook them.

If you can afford it, just replace them.

I did it to my old C-2. Man what a difference it made. Made the snap rolls real aggressive, stalks fed through real nice. I made the beads kind of jagged. I think there may be replacement parts for the snap rolls, but this was a quick, cheap, and easy fix.
