gleaner engine identification.

I purchased a 1959 D17 a few weeks ago. I was told that the engine was off of a gleaner combine but was not sure what model it was. How can I find out what I have as far as the year and make of it? It's a 6cyl and runs great but the governors don't work and I would like to get that fixed. Thanks for any help yall can give.

If it was a 4 cyl gas I"d say it was from a Model E, but the gas 6 cylinders I"m familiar with are the Chevy (GM) engines, and they wouldn"t bolt in like the E does.

Most likely that was a D17 diesel, and the trouble prone 6 cyl. Buda/AC was replaced with the very reliable gas version out of a combine.
If that's the case, there was a tag on the right side of the block, towards the rear, showing engine ID.

There is no I.D. tag that I could find. The only numbers on the block are between the coil and governor. The top number is 79, under that is 12 6 63, under that is 4512880 the last two# have been ground off and restamped.Then there is a 7 underneath that. This engine looks alot like a 230 I saw for sale online.

Maybe they didn't start putting that tag on until later. I have a friend with an early Gleaner F with the tag showing "G262", etc.
That seven digit number 45***** is a typical AC engine related number, starting with the Budas I think.
It probably is a 230. They were used in Gleaner A's after AC acquired Gleaner and Buda. I think it was the 262 in the C, as well the F, and possibly the G.

hanks for all the info. I will try to post some photos of the tractor and engine so someone might can tell for sure what it is. I am pretty sure its not from a wd45 just from pictures of those tractors. I really think its a 230 but no idea what year.

If it"s a
WD45 engine, the serial number is on the left side, stamped just to the rear of the carb.

If it's a 6 cylinder gas it's not from a WD45. They were 4 cylinders like the d17 gas. That D17 must have been a diesel at one time like stated above.
