Gleaner F combine

What's the good the bad and the ugly with a Gleaner F with a gas engine. Would this be an Allis engine ? I don't know anything about Gleaners, my experience is with IH. Used to have a 715 and then a 1440. There's one on an online auction close to me. Was used on a few acres around an acreage. Thinking it be fun to "play" with. Thanks.

There is some chance of various engines to my remembrance. They are tough machines and were selected for durability and clean cutting when used by custom cutting crews early in that industry. If it has few hours, and the mechanisms have had maintenance (chains/sprockets/belts/drives/hydraulics) look good it will be fine. Jim

1968 and maybe some early1969 had Allis engines, but after that they were GM 292 straight sixes. If it has had a straw chopper on it, check for broken/missing rivits on the separator hood.

Ours had a 292 chevy six in it, my understanding was some had an Allis motor too. Not to be negative but the engine was the only good thing on ours. Our F ate bearings like candy, if you are used to the hydrostatic transmission the three speed manual with a variable speed will be a great leap backward. The hydraulic system overheated when using the automatic header control. As I remember the quick attics head left much to be desired. We have the orange corn head,I don't remember the number, it was a pig to work on, a lot of roller chains underneath. The cylinder was prone to plugging in modest conditions. We traded a 815 IH with a blown main seal for this thing and regretted every minute of it, finally traded for a 6600 deere which was much better and then to rotary IH and never looked back, we have a 2366 now. My choice would be find a decent 1460 and have your fun with that.

During the 1980's I worked for a dealer who had both the AC and John Deere contract. The AC bearings were definitely inferior to the Deere bearings. We cross referenced as many Deere bearings as possible. Don't have any idea who Agco uses for their bearings.
The Chevy engine was the most common for the our customers.
