Gleaner K - I'm confused

Looked at a Gleaner K today...serial number SC33 - 24367 (I believe the S is right, was a little hard to tell) ...earlier posts I read show a K or KKS but not an SC33 and 24367 showed it to be a first year K2...but it's a K. Has spike tooth cylinder, variable cylinder and fan speeds, has the floating header with auto height and variable reel with hydraulic reel height...also, I grow wheat and oats and understand the spike cylinder will do a nice job in small grains as well as corn and soybeans?

Hi Jim!A spike tooth will do a better( I think) in small grains. But will not work in corn(it will grind cobs ) or beans(it will crack beans).Find a Rasp bar machine.Keep on 'shoppin'.Good luck!! Steve

I don't know about corn but a spike tooth will work wonderful in beans. We had an A-6 Case back in the day. Hard to find a machine that could do a better job.

As an after thought, I think I may have gotten the serial number off of the straw chopper instead of the combine...what a dummy!!...still need everbody's thoughts on using the spike tooth cylinder in wheat and oats though...Jim

Dont know anything about soybeann...but pintobeans, yes. There a few older 'bean combines'here that use(side delivery) rake teeth/open cylinder that work famously.I was thinking a regular spikecylinder would be a bean grinder.Pintos crack VERY easily, need a cylinder speed of 200 rpm or less. These days,an'Axial Flow'combine is popular for pintos.Steve

As far as I'm concerned, a spike cylinder was made for beans. Basically good for snapping pods open, without the grinding action of rasp bars.
If this is the machine you want, a rasp bar cylinder and concaves should be easy to find, and not bad to change either.

don't understand the logic on wont work on.....
I had spike tooth combines all my life except one, that I hated to use before a frost
corn, you do have to be careful how you set it but it surely can be done
I cut 3000 acres a year with spike tooth combines
go ahead, counter?

You can't beat a spike tooth in soybeans or small grains it will crack and grind corn bad. We ran a Massey 410 in beans for years not one bean left in the pod.

OK,I messed up.I admit it.My comments were made soley on my experience with rasp bar machines(25+ years)and on my perceptions of (and'hearsay')the spike tooth cylinder.Steve
