Glowing hot manifold

I have a 48 A which is having some issues. The manifold will get cherry red after a short while in non-working mode. Running rough, and backfiring. I cleaned the carburetor and drilled out the three idle passageways. What else could it be?

Something is still plugged, sure sounds like it is running lean,check fuel flow to carb,then out of carb drain,if all good,pull the carb again. you didnt say how idle and or load needles affect it,should be able to make it run rich and black smoke out the exhaust

Double check your timing. Broke the impulse spring in the mag on my G once and it was very similar symptoms.

Like others have said, most likely carb or timing. Timing is the quickest to check.

A lean condition will make exhaust gas temps rise.

There should be more than just 3 passage ways to clean out. Sounds like something is still plugged.

Yup its the carb. She's lean.
