Finished replacing the pump this AM. Got a rebuilt pump w/o reservoir for $40 from O'Reilly's and ended up borrowing a loaner pulley installation tool from Car Quest. Also 2 quarts of Auto Zone power steering fluid at just over $5 a quart! It works and is silent--so far. Don't see any leaks yet--hope there aren't any as it was a lot of stuff to pull apart to replace it.
To make myself feel about having to do all this I called and asked a dealership how much to replace my pump. He said he couldn't be exact because he didn't know which pump I needed but approximately $675-$700. He then said to be exact he could transfer me to parts to figure out what pump I needed from the VIN and he noted the labor would be $180. Parts said the pump I needed was $176. I'm no genius but $176 for the pump and $180 for labor is only $356 not even close to $675. So, I called a second dealer and asked how much to replace my power steering pump--the shaft broke. He asked all about my truck and said around $700 and they'd be glad to do the work. Maybe I misheard the labor rate. Whatever.
