Gold Demonstrator

Yes, they were available in the 601, 701 and 1801 series also. Any 1959 Ford tractor that was built with the SOS transmission in the 61000 to 71000 serial number range was a Gold Demo.

Tex, I always wondered were they originally painted gold or was it gold over the original color?

Reason I ask is you hear of Demonstrators with red paint beneath the gold.

The Gold Demo's left the factory painted gold. I have heard (but never seen a Factory Service Bulletin stating so) that the dealer was supposed to paint the Gold Demo Red & Gray when he sold it.
The reason you have heard of Gold over Red is because when the factory replaced the SOS in all tractors up to serial number 93000 (or thereabouts) the SOS that was removed was returned to the factory so that it could be rebuilt with the updated parts and sent back out as a replacement. Those SOS transmissions with serial numbers between 61000 and 710000 would be Gold and those between 71000 and 93000 would be Red. The factory did not repaint the SOS when they did the overhaul so it is possible that a Gold Demo received a rebuilt Red transmission and a non-Gold Demo received a rebuilt Gold transmission. The Service Bulletin announcing the SOS replacement specifically stated that the dealer was supposed to order a can of the Gold paint and paint the Red transmission Gold if it was being installed in a Gold Demo tractor. In that specific situation you would find Gold paint on top of Red.
