Has anyone had any recent experience with the golden aftermarket carburetor? They still a good option?

I've never bought a new carb for an N. And, given the price & quality work they do, I just have carbs rebuilt by:

They do mail order work. And they also rebuild clutches, pressure plates, water pumps, alternators, generators, starters & reline brakes.

By the time you buy a complete carb kit & the cleaning solvent, the $80 they charge for a rebuild is worth it.

I have an old marvel, but I have gone through it and I can't get it to run right. I normally send it to GB but he has his hand full with his wife.

I had one years ago that I had problems with and could not get it cleaned up. I let it sit about a year an then tried again due to needing one for a tractor with out on and it cleaned up. But that was also before I learned to use a torch tip cleaner tool in all the passage ways. I also learned to soak the carb for 24 or more hours

Even if you add $50 or so for a core to the $80 rebuild you still end up with a better deal than buying some no name pot metal import.

I bought one aftermarket carb a few years back. that was the first and the last time. I just rebuild my own. Probably got a half dozen in a box that I've picked up at swap meets for less than $20. I need one I just rebuild one. The biggest thing is you have to clean them and then clean them some more. Really pretty a simple carburetor

How completely interchangeable are the 241s and the 33 M/S carburetors? I might have enough parts to get one good carburetor out of the group.

FYI, when going through it I usually let it set for about two-four days then take the wires and spray can of cleaner.

I have never had a issue with the gold colored ones BUT a black repop almost ate my lunch one time...

They are identical to a original down to being cast out of iron are steel the only exception is it has a plastic ventura... If you have never had your hands on one then speculating they are pot metal is a myth...

I think i may know what that other user may have been refering to......it's been a while.. maybee 10ys or more. but at one point someone was importing a repop 241 style carb that was indeed some sort of light alloy. it usually corrodes with a white powder and has a gold colored finish that flakes off in pieces leaving a porous white powder underneath. weighs about half a cast carb.

in my shop I have a 241 and 33 original, a tractor supply cast iron repop no name, and one of them alloy ones.

same kit from tisco seems to fit all of them... but that flaky one with powder residue is odd. I've never used it.. always held it in reserve.. payed 35$ for it... probably got ripped.. dunno.

my guess is it is zinc-aluminum alloy based on some materials we use at work that are zinc-aluminum allow.

It is not straight cast aluminum for sure. I have other cast aluminum parts and it is different.

that plating is the troubling part. it is plated internally.. and flakes internally too. pieces the size of yur fingernail will sometimes come up with a white bubbly corrosion under it.

i have often wondered if it was zinc nickle plating...

anyone else see these carbs?

Note. I have not seen one of these carbs in a decade ( since I got mine anyway ).... I have bought a few of the cheap cast iron ones from tractor supply for small engine projects at work.. and for the most part those are fine.

I wonder if the other user who posted earlier maybee ran across one of these carbs?

If someone knew of a quick / easy home test to find out what it was I'd be interested..

any home chemists out there?

magnet won't stick to it.. will stick to the scres in the top of it though. so it is something other than iron or steel.

to other posters: anyone got one of these carbs? feels lighter than original.. etc

SON Of A Buick,,, I have one on the shelf (Sparex S.61596) so picked it up it weighs 3.75 lbs (heavy little sucker) and about did not pull it out of the box for a look see... I tote a telescoping magnet in my shirt pocket guess whut it does not stick to it... :shock:

I have sold a dozen are so of'em and looked into one never had a issue with them... The lumium issue is a non issue to me as I have see a 1000's of lumium carbs in good working order that are older than N...

I know for a fact those black repo's are iron and hope I never see another one with issues... The issue I had with a new one is they did not completely drill the idle passage all the way so I had to and it was a P.I.T.A. knowing I was gonna break off that tiny drill bit...

I believe ya if you gat a dud you got a dud... I would argue with ya till ell froze over if I had not stuck a magnet to it...
