Good gas caddy

Looking for a decent 25-30 gallon gas caddy, hand pump is fine, I find em for 180-250$ and reviews are terrible cheap pumps, non standard threads etc. good ones are 600-700$, there has to be a middle ground, Or do I build my own, just looking to use as temp fuel storage, and can fill tractors or w/e, lemme know what you guys use/have willing to spend a lil money but 600$ seems outrageous thanks Dusty

I assume you want something to hold gasoline. I have a RoughNeck 30-gallon caddy that I got from Northern Tool. It was round $500 and very well made. Most
of the cheap ones you see on Ebay appear to be a copy of it. HMC and John Dow make similar units. In fact my Northern fuel caddy came with a John Dow
rotary pump. The main complaint I see about the cheaper versions is the hose being too flimsy and kinking very easily. You can get a better hand pump for
less than $100 and a good quality replacement hose is around $50. Perhaps one approach is to get one of the cheaper ones and then upgrade the pump and
hose if you feel it is necessary. I'm not aware of the non-standard threads. Most seem to use 3/4 or 7/8 fittings. I actually replaced the hose on my
RoughNeck, not because it was flimsy but because the material it was made from would get super stiff in very cold weather. I was able to buy a replacement
from HMC that screwed right on and now stays very flexible even in the coldest weather.

Before you spend any money, how do you plan on filling it?

30 gallons of gas is about 200lbs, so you're not lifting the caddy into and out of your truck by hand.

The caddy is illegal to transport it with gas in it anyway. Yeah yeah, I know, I've heard all the arguments and the "So what's." Do as you wish, just be aware that it is TECHNICALLY illegal. The Sheriff deputy may not even bat an eyelash, or he may give you a ticket. Your mileage may vary. If he/she does give you a ticket, make sure to give him/her plenty of lip. Sheriff deputies LOVE it when you get lippy.

A bulk supplier is not going to make a delivery of 30 gallons.

So, you're left hauling 5 gallon cans of gas from the gas station, and pouring them over into your caddy, to in turn pump into the tractor... Why not just go straight from the 5 gallon cans into the tractor?

I bought a 30 gal one at a sale and the pump and hose was junk. It went into the wood furnace. I wanted it for diesel so I cleaned it up real good and sprayed it JD yellow and added fuel decals on it. I had a 12 volt fuel pump here so I screwed that into the top. Works great. I fill 5 gal cans back the truck up to it and drop my small pump into the 5 gal cans and pump fuel into it. No lifting or anything. I think it cost me 620 bucks. It is a fuel caddy that is used in marine on the dock. I think new they are around 160.00 dollar but check craigslist as there is usually some on there in the boat parts section. I looked at the ones for 600 ot 700 dollars but I did not want one that big

"The caddy is illegal to transport it with gas in it anyway"

Close but no cookie for you.
That should say

The caddy is illegal to transport once it has gasoline in it even if it is now empty.
Just the gas fumes is enough to make it illegal to transport by john doe homeowner.

That's how I fill mine. In my case I can just crank the pump handle backwards and pump the contents from the 5-gallon cans into the caddy. Once filled with
Sta-Bil treated non-Ethanol gasoline it lasts me about 3 months in the summer. Cranking the handle makes for effortless filling of tractor, generators,
yard equipment, etc. So I only have to deal with 5-gallon cans every few months. I also like the ability to suck fuel back out of fuel tanks whenever the
need arises.

If you lived close I'd give this one to ya. Bought it 20 years ago but don't use it anymore. Filrite pump and automatic noozle. One tractor and rtv gas. Everything else diesel. Gas station is a mile away. Two 5 gallon cans work for me now.

What makes a gas caddy illegal, but not a 5 gallon gas can? Or the 100 gallon transfer tanks I see sold? I want to see the code that makes it illegal.

No need to take our word for it. You should be able to access the fuel transportation laws for your state on-line. They are different for gasoline and
diesel.

8 gallons of gas seems to be right. 5 if you fall under OSHA. So take 6 of the junk plastic cans and fill the caddy at home. OSHA seems to think those cans need tied down in transport too.

That's not a bad price. You'll definitely want to replace the hose as you'll probably find it kinks shut very easily. Not sure about the pump. Even with a new hose the overall cost won't be too bad.
