I pull a Farmall 300. I don't pull alot (maybe 5-6 times a year) but at some of the pulls I pull in they won't allow me to use my TA in the Antique Class ( I would have to pull in a Open Class) And my tractor is far from pulling in an open class. I was told that this is a normal rule for Antique Tractor pulling. Is that so? If so why? I mean it is a stock part of the tractor and it ain't my fault that nobody else has one!

Well my 770 oliver i pull everywhere in farm classes has a TA and the only rules about it is you can shift it once some places, other places it either has to stay in low side or high side. it sounds like they are saying if you want to shift it you have to be in an open class but that is a bad rule. it should be the same for both classes.

The rule is generally "the rule" at antique pulls in the stock or Div. I (NATPA) classes...I like it...MOST of the tractors in those classes don't have any sort of torque amplifying device, so why not keep it fair? Most allow you to use either range which already gives you a tad more flexibility when choosing the proper gear for the track, they just don't allow you to shift from one to the other. Think of it this way...if there were an antique model out there with a CVT hydro transmission, should it be allowed when most are using standard shift trannies?
I support and agree with the rule...the pull I am involved in running requires it stay in the low side at all times.
If they started allowing the use of them then pretty soon no one without some sort of torque multiplier would show up...no fun in a 1 or 2 hook class.

whats the big deal,? I use the torque some times and its made me spinout and it has saved me sometime ,, if I go to a pull with no shifting I just go down to a gear that i know I woun't run out of power , In stock classes the speed differance is not going to make any differance IT may help you no torque guys becuse many times I wish I hadn't used it

Do they prevent you from shifting the T/A or just using low?

They won't allow me to use it during the pull! I can pull it before I start and pull with it on the low side but I can't shift while pulling.

In my area (Ohio) some pull rules allow you to shift, some don't, but none that i know of say you can't have the TA. As far as advantage, it can be if the driver really knows his tractor but most i have seen and pulled against end up beating themselves by shifting.

Usually it depends on the age limit for the pull, if more recent, or farm stock they are allowed, for older, not. Kind of level the field, like socialism and external_link
