Got an early Christmas present

Santa brought me 6 bundles of R15 insulation, 10 sheets of 4X10-5/8 fire rated drywall and 5 sheets of 4X12-5/8.
Work is slow right now so I spent the last couple days putting the stuff in.
Man that FR drywall is heavy!
I just did the South wall and one row on the ceiling for now. A little at a time.
We had a couple of unseasonally warm days this week so I was out there. I'm sure Real winter is just around the corner though so there likely won't be much more progress till March.
At least I got the building enclosed.
When I started this project I said I'd give an occasional update here.

Garage is looking great. Looks like 8 ft tall garage doors. I wish I had put 8 ft doors in when I did my garage. Are you going to have any outlets on the wall you have drywalled?
 

Can't beat the Satisfaction of putting a building together and having it come looking Sweet. I agree with you on the 5/8 fire rated. Here in Maine, if the building is not Attached directly to the Living Space, we don't need Fire Rated Sheet Rock, although its still a damn good Idea to use it just in Case !!.
Good Job. Enjoy the Holidays as you roam around the inside looking for Mistakes !! we have all done that.

That's the first thing the electrical inspector asked too. "Why no outlets on that wall?
I told him I will build a bunch of heavy shelving on that wall and run conduit on the face of the shelving. He said ok.
I will run conduit pretty much throughout the building except the office in the other corner.
Makes it easy to customize your elec. system for future needs without opening walls, crawling in the attic, etc.
Yes, 8' high doors. My row crop won't go under a 7'.
 
AS memory serves... and sometimes I'm glad it DOESN'T... the 4 X 12 FR is 110# per sheet... no, I don't miss it a bit.. but could still do some of it if needed..

You're right, ya can't HAVE too many outlets... a couple 220 Options, is nice, too. I'll guess the LED choices out there, while more expensive, will care a lot LESS than florescent about the ambient temperature or Lack of it.

Back when I built my MN garage that you saw, the inspector wanted one light, one outlet and one switch... but once you get past that, you were left to your own devices. I enjoyed the gas Modine garage heater (suspended unit) for years but had to take it down when I sold... no permit on file. But that same heater works wonderful well in Rapid City to this day!!

It's looking great! Even knowing it will never be "done"... always a bit more to do... or upgrade... or... :-)

Plus one on surface wiring in a shop. Rent or buy a drywall jack and you won't care how heavy the sheets are....

I am scraping all florescent lights. I can buy 4', 4500 lumins LED for $19.99 each. I bought 4 yesterday at a Rural King store. If you are not familiar with Rural King, I liken them to Tractor Supply and Harbor Freight combined and on steroids.
I did buy 10 this summer at Menards that are 5500 lumins for $29.00 each. They are going into my barn in the high bay (12 foot ceiling).
 
Great looking garage/shop. Hope you don't go through the pain someday of "wish it was bigger". In 1983 I thought a 36x48 pole barn would handle everything I ever wanted to do. HA! I have added 12x48 on the north side. FULL!
No more additions. I need to eliminate some "stuff". Also not letting sons put "stuff" in there.

I went with T8 fixtures in mine. They're relatively inexpensive and with Sylvania 32W daylight (6500k) bulbs have good light. Two bulbs are supposed to put out ~5600 mean lumens. I haven't seen any inexpensive LED fixtures around here - everyone wants an arm & a leg for them.
 
That's an excellent Christmas present! What will you be using for heat? I have to redo the floor in the shop and I'm thinking I'll do radiant in a part of it. I find that my feet get really cold if I'm standing on a slab for an extended period of time.

I am in the process of installing new high bay lighting to add on and replace the 8' T12 HO florescent strips I currently have. As the T12 lamps and/or ballast fail I replace with LED. You can get a 10,000 lumen high bay LED fixture for ~$100 - roughly equivalent to 6 x 32W T6 florescent. I toyed with the idea of using LED retrofit tubes in the T12 fixtures but they would cost as much if not more than a new LED fixture.

There are a lot of sources depending on exactly what you want - round, LED linear array, LED ready bare fixture, retrofits, etc. Competition is fierce and sales abound. Check out 1000bulbs.com for examples. Yes, color choices available. LED is taking the market by storm. Hit Google for high bay LED and stand back.

Looking good Jerry! I second the drywall jack suggestion.
I rented one when I put up the ceiling in my shop and wouldn't
do it any other way now. Once we got the hang of it, it was just
as fast as two guys on ladders, you didn't have to hold it while
getting set, and we (me and one helper) did the whole ceiling in
a day. It was only 32 x 32 but there were all the overhead door
mountings, electrical outlets in the ceiling for the door openers,
etc. that we had to work around.

I wish I had thought to use the conduit instead now. I borrowed
a lot of knowledge from others and from previous jobs like having
some receptacles that turn off with the lights and some that don't,
color coded with different colored face plates, extra PVC elbows out
through the poured floor for whatever I might want add later, radiant
floor heat, etc. but there are still things I wish I'd done differently.

Yes, I will be looking at LED lighting.
Because they're not affected by severe
cold like fluorescent lights which is
important here but you can get them super
bright -
I wanna have to wear sunglasses in there -
and the cost to run them is a lot cheaper.
 
One key thing to factor in with LED lighting is the warranty.

We have nice LED undercabinet lighting in the kitchen. Fortunately the fixtures have a five year warranty because I've had to replace several of them. The LEDs themselves may last the rated 80k hours, but they are at the mercy of the other electronics. The electronics fail, it takes too much time to source replacements and is easier to replace the entire fixture. If I had to pay for the replacement fixtures I would go back to fluorescents.

Just my $.02. :)
