Got another question Ford 650

As some of u may know I just recently bought a Ford 650 and I am still learning about these tractors. I was wondering how to check the trans oil level? I pulled the cap today and I cannot see any oil down in the case. It has a small oil drip on the bottom of the trans case out of a plate bolted on the case. On the left hand side of the case there is 3 plugs that take a flathead screw driver to get out. I am guessing these r check plugs and the oil level should be filled to the top plug. Am I right? Also wondering what is under that plate and why oil is leaking out? better get that fixed because I know it is way low because I can see no oil when I look down inside the filler cap. Thanks, Jason.

cap screws are the trans shifter detents.. no need to pull them.

on the right hand side aft of your foot / hel, there is a level check plug .. DON'T remove any bolts from that area.. only that level plug...

plate underneath dripping is probably just a weepy trans input shaft seal.... though if it s low on oil.. then I'd say see if it's motor oil as it would then be a leaky rear main.. something most fords have.. :)

I have been adding about 1 quart of oil to about 12 hours of work. But it doesn't smoke any at all. there is a small drip at rear of oil pan so guessing it is the rear main. Thanks for the info I'll check for that plug.

I guess if you get cheap bulk oil, a qt/12hr aint bad.. but sounds like more thana drip.

what do the plugs look like?

I'm not a fan of mechanic in a can.. but I think I'd do an oil change with that high milage oil on the next change and see if it couldn't swell up something a bit :)

I think I am gonna have to put a rear main in pretty soon. I just put new plugs in it and they were black sooted. I am having a problem with it running too rich. I have adjusted the carb and it didn't help too much. I think I am going to replace it with one of those aftermarket aluminum carbs that u can get on this site. But there is no signs at all of burning oil.

too rich may mean a vacume leak.. investigate that before you repalce it

and the swelling oil may put off that rea main for a few years.....

yes, it leans the circuit, making you heavilly enrich the main jet to try and compensate.

all that gas is still being burned and will show up on the plugs. I've yet to see one with a vacume leak run right, even heavilly enriched.. still always seems to foul the plugs.. etc.

Pic of trans level plug on my 850. Yours should be in the same place.
