Got some Valuable info

So, I'm trying to figure why my '50s 8N is blowing blue smoke, tore it down did a dry comp test, showed 90psi on 3 & 85 on one. Took head off looked over valves, looks good there [will lap & add new seals while things are apart] Stopped at tractor shop and mechanic ask if I had the oil bath cleaner hooked up when I ran it and if I'd cleaned the inside good. It was hooked up & I didn't check for upper intake holes being clean. He said it could acctually suck the oil from the cleaner into the carb/head and make it smoke like crazy. Souns like I may have discovered my problem. Anybody experience this??

'd say the jury is still out on that "valuable' part, especially.
#1, just look at the path the oil would have to travel through to get from bottom of air cleaner to carb. #2, it is only a pint...that shouldn't last long if actually burning enough to make blue smoke. #3, how far below the full mark is the current filter oil level...i.e., how much is missing, since when?
I don't take everyone's statements at face value.....if I did I would have 536 more people who's word I would trust. Keep us informed on you findings, of course.

Satch.......ran into interesting report of an "oil pumper" ...ie... blue smoker with near perfect compression (ie yer 85psi) Turns out the previous engine rebuild somehow "overlapped" the ends of the wiggly oil control ring during installation and broke it OFF. The "only" cure was new oil control rings. Hadda buy a set of 4. (frown) The top-two compression rings end gaps were correct and staggered as required. In yer case, you would also need to know iff'n "over-sized". Special micrometer is needed to read cylinder diameter ......HTH, Dell

Sooo, since I wrote the post, I checked the airfilter canaster and the top was very dirty, but the wire mesh gutts showed no signs of oil, the downtube to carb had no oil residue, so I think that cause is out. Dell, I'd have to remove pistions to find out about the oilring? tractor ran for long time then the oil burning.

I've used the oil bath type air filter on several trucks and cars I've had ,and some of the old cars had oil that possibly could have gotten sucked into the carb,but they were directly above the carb and if someone had overfilled it it would be possible.But the way the "ns" are set up,I'm skeptical.---lha

Respectfully, as you know, the oil bath air cleaner depends on drawing oil up into the mesh for fine particle filtration. If you use too light an oil, it"s possible for some entrained oil to get to the carb, especially in hot weather but that"s easy enough to check for.(I believe the Ferguson Manual warns of this.) You merely temporarely disconnect the air cleaner from the carb and, if the blue smoke came from air cleaner oil,the blue smoke will vanish. As you point out, you can also notice that the oil level in the cup has diminished. So it"s pretty easy to determine if this is the cause of blue smoke in the exhaust. I"d wager that 99.9% of the time the cause of blue exhaust smoke WON"T be attributable to the air filter oil!Not highly probable of a cause, but still possible.
