I bypassed the 2nd resistor and got correct voltage back to the coil. My guess is that the guy who put the 8 volt battery in there tried to step the voltage down to save the coil. I have had a 6-volt battery in it for 5+ years now and have really never had too much trouble until recently.
So: got back to good voltage at the coil, no spark. Checked the coil resistance and it was ok. Seemed like the pigtail wasn't really compressing much so I pulled it out a bit, no spark. Took off the distributor and bent out the spring on the top of the rotor, started on the 1st revolution.
Runs great and idles smoother and faster than before. Sure the points/plugs are cleaned and re-gapped but I bet having correct voltage at the coil is a big plus as well.
