Governor fun late 8n

I was sent to this forum from the guys in the tools forum. Although they answered my initial questions or two...they don't want me over there for what I need.
I have many things wrong with this new to me 8n that my wife bought for me. I have worked through much of the crap, like a weird 12v conversion that I think I have working for now and will change again in the future. At least I made it run and shut off. Here is the deal: Initially I had trouble with the linkages, iI could not get the full range out of my quadrant it was only using the first 1/4-1/3 from idle to rocket ship. I worked through that and now at least that is going right. Like I mentioned, I did get the 12v ignition to work with some wiring changes and using a piece of wood and 2 1/4" bolts for a terminal block until my ACTUAL terminal block gets here from Steiner. I decided to take the governor off to shim the lever ( it was quite wobbly) and check the clearance of the shim stack. When I removed the governor, or what was left of it, I ordered a new one and it will be here Tuesday. There was a lower race, the piece that holds the steel balls ( but no steel balls) nor anything else beyond that point just a bare shaft. No sign of the other parts anywhere and hoping they aren't in the oil pan. So now to my question.....with the governor removed, is it possible to see about starting the tractor and just setting the idle? I don't believe it needs the governor to idle does it? Since everything is relaxed in the idle position...Just a thought. I hate to waste good weather and not work on something.

Hi TJ64,
Welcome to this forum:)
Glad you posted your 8n question here.
If the gov with the parts missing is installed, and the carb butterfly is held on the idle set screw, it should be OK to start. ( it ran then shut off)

Make sure the oil line is connected.

If the butterfly opens 1/8" above the idle SET SCREW to its stop peg, the engine will hit 2200 rpms, so make sure the butterfly is held down.( or hold on to the 7" link rod )

The gov base, 8n 18191 has narrow openings to let oil flow out,,, they look too small for the missing parts to get through....

yes, I have no idea where all those parts went. Or if they were even on there when my wife bought it. My governor came a day early! However I had a class to teach this morning and then my shop was crazy busy after that. I came upstairs and the new governor was on the table :) Best Monday ever! If I can keep my fingers warm long enough, I'm gonna try to get this thing fired up tonight. P.S., I did have it running the way it was so I should be able to make it go.

New approach! Im not really a trusting type in the first place. I no longer believe ANYTHING the previous owner told me. I took off the fuel tank last year when I got the machine and cleaned that out. replaced the sediment bowl and all 3 filters. So I didn't think I had an issue there. However, I did the flow test AGAIN today and surmised the issue was in the carb. Pulled the carb ( supposed to be new when I bought the tractor a year ago) I could see some crap in it when looking down from the top. NOT PLAYING, I went to the barn and got the other NEW carb that came with it. Set both screws one turn out, installed it...Tractor started up without the choke, will idle ALL day @ 450 and sounds like a sewing machine Nice and smooth. Dont try to give it any throttle though :/ it starts to sputter at around 900RPM. Now going to look at the points I guess. BTW, I think what is causing all my trouble is that the previous owner painted it the wrong color, lol

Maybe this:

At the time, the largest torch cleaner wire i had was .065. Later got a drill set, and found it actually is .076.

Edit to fix link
