Governor housing toast?

Bought a used governor recently with hopes of changing out the welded up housing on my 1951 8n side mount. Looked like a reasonable project for a 70 year old newbie .....when I pulled the centrifugal assembly out the inside of the housing was deeply scored.....Im guessing the balls with MANY flat spots caused it? Can this be saved or is it toast? Presently keeping my welded up one(from p.o.)

Couldn't agree more Bob , however neither are on the tractor right now and I m more curious as to what would have caused this "rut" and why did it happen?

The ruts are caused by the balls getting past the worn cones & riding against the governor case. The balls probably have flat spots & the cones are definitely worn.

Ok! Thanks Bruce. So if I understand this the balls would only contact the inside of the housing when the cones are worn out?

I was scanning old posts and saw your picture of the worn housing. Mine looks exactly the same and was thinking I needed to replace it. From the replies you received am I understanding that what they recommended was to just change the balls and race? No need to replace housing? What have you found since then? I've read new governors are not reliable. Thanks!

. So that was my take from the reply ....that the balls only contact the housing if the cones are worn out. I have always been one to try to figure things out so I pulled the working governor off my other 8n to compare the two! Sorry to say the looked exactly the same as far as the cones etc went. However if I can get this pic to post you can see that the housing that was scored so badly is also warped! What caused this? I hope we have a governor guru on here......if it were a carb question I know many on here to ask.......right Royse and G.B.?
