8n side mount. posted some time ago about this tractor not idling down consensus was governor problem. so planning on pulling it and get a rebuild kit.

couple of questions

first how hard to rebuild these? any special tools needed?

second; tractor is 2 hours away. plan on pulling the gov and bring it home for the rebuild. its outside so i want to do something to cover the open spot when the gov is off. thinking a piece of plywood but don't know what size to make it or the size of the screw holes.

thanks to all.

Money Pit , Some duct tape will block the hole just fine for months. Just be sure to put the short bolt back in the top hole to prevent damage to the cam gear.
There are some special tools for the governor repair. But I have not needed them to rebuild several of them, just some proper measurements.

. Good evening, Money Pit and all: Governor is not too hard for an amateur, but do your work carefully. I replaced some parts in my 2Ns governor, under instructions from an old time tractor shop owner. I thought I was home free, but some time later I was changing oil and noticed a small hairpin clip in the screen. It belonged in the governor! The result was the flyballs rubbed against the inside of the cast metal governor body. I may have needed to replace the governor body after that, I don't recall. (The old time shop man had a yard full of N series tractors so getting another governor or part of one would not have been a big deal.). My comment is to work slowly, the governor is not complicated, but everything needs to be in good condition and assembled carefully.

Two thoughts from my rebuild.

Take a picture of the Horse shoe before you remove it so it is reinstalled correctly.
Careful to adjust shims as described in shop manual so the balls do not extend beyond the discs more then recommended.

I went through a bunch of BS trying to get a working governor, new, used ect. No luck, I dib however find a seller on Ebay and purchased one of his oem rebuilds and it works perfectly. The price was right, he includes the gasket and a DVD with adjustment instructions. Also offers a core exchange. His seller name is dshop123. He has one listed currently. After my experience with a new aftermarket governor I was hesitant purchasing a aftermarket rebuild kit. Good luck.
