Governor removal on a 550

Hey all, I'm back, .. I have what appears to be a little seepage of oil coming from the bottom bolt on the front of the governor. It appeared after I cleaned the entire motor and prept it for paint. I guess the dirt and grime was keeping the leak at bay. I noticed it a couple of days after I primed the motor. How easy/hard is to remove the face plate of the governor to replace the gasket?

Not hard. Four bolts. You'll have to take off the air cleaner and maybe the generator. Just be careful sliding it off. The gear and shaft might come with the case, might stay in the block. You'll know soon enough.

Hey RR, everything is off the engine, it's 4 bolts? I see 3, two at the top one down at the bottom. Thats the one thats seeping and if the gear and shaft come with it it should slide back in, right?

Three sounds right. I didn't just take one off today. LOL Last one I took off was on the 1600, but could well have been three bolts too.

The gear is helical and might turn and come out. There's a bearing on the outside end against the fork for the throttle lever. Just make sure that doesn't fall apart. It's slightly possible if it's worn too badly. If the shaft and gear come out, I'd put it back in and then put the case back on over it. It should be pretty uneventful though. There's a brass washer between that gear and the block.I'd pull it out and make sure that washer is OK as long as you're in there. If that washer wears out, it'll start wearing in to the gear where it'll be running against the block casting.

Glad to hear it. I've had those balls fall out of that bearing before. That's my only concern when I pull one apart.
