Hi All,

I'm working on the governor for my 2N and noticed some pits on the lower race. If you look at the lower race on mine there's 3 small pits where each ball is positioned. Is it normal for the lower race to get pits? The balls and upper race appear fine. I also noticed the washer (part# 357319S) that goes between the gear and the base is missing. Any suggestions on how to remove the gear from the shaft?

The balls wear those pits into the plate from running at the same speed for long periods. The new balls will want to sink into the pits, so you need a lower race plate that's flat and has no pits if you want the governor to work properly.
The washer is only used on the 8N side distributor governors that have the proofmeter drive. All others thrust against a disk under the rear bushing.
Pressing the gear off works best, but you can get it off with a standard 2 or 3 jaw gear puller.

Thanks for the info. Right now there's about 1/10th inch of slack where the base and lower race can slide between the gear and the ball holder on the shaft. Should there be that much slack or should there be less (just enough for the base and lower race to turn freely)?

That will change when it's assembled. Put it all together, push the shaft fully rearward and make sure the gear isn't rubbing. That's all you need.

thanks guys , I did read and one guy says this washer is used on 8n side distrib with proof meter. I have 2n with front dist and no proof meter. so do I use it or not? I did have balls that were wearing on the inside housing. the clearance was was it was supposed to be when I took it apart. ??

You answered your own question. If it's for an 8N sidemount and you have
a 2N frontmount, why would you try to use it???
