I am working on a jd 50.I put the cover on and it is too tight .Do i need more shims and if so what size? It only had 1 shim and i put in new bearing

Since it is spring loaded from the right side how are you determining that it is "too tight", did you examine both bearings? is the RH bearing race free to move in it's bore?

That being said, the parts catalog lists two gaskets, calling them "thin" and "thick", no dimensions are listed.

B284R = thick
B569R = thin

Looks like both are still available from DEERE.
 
Some times the bearing won't set in the race properly and if you force it, it will break the bearing. I usually push on the cover to see that it will move and then tighten the bolts a little at a time equally while turning the flywheel back and forth to make sure it is properly seated. If not, the flywheel won't turn and if you force it, it will break the bearing.
