Grain O Vator trailer type question

I have a couple variations, one is a Grain-O-Vator trailer, another is yellow bottomed with galvanized top section. My question is, the horizontal auger that runs the length of the wagon on one trailer is not covered nor never was from the factory. The yellow trailer has a piece of angle iron over the top the full length about 2 inches above the auger. I assume this keeps the bearings of the auger from having the weight of the load on top of the auger flighting.

Both trailers are probably from the '50's-'60's. Both work, but wonder if I should put the angle iron over the uncovered auger before a problem. Am I over thinking this? What is the consensus of this group? Thanks in advance.

The piece over the auger is to help with keeping it from pluging the auger if you were to try using it in wet grain. It limits the flow to the auger at start up and throughout the unloading. I'm assuming that this auger runs parallel to the floor and has another auger to load wagons or trucks with that goes vertical. Something like a gran cart does. If not then it has to just unload into an auger or pit under it. It mostly makes it easier on the auger and drive line at start up and if not empty when truck or wagon is loaded if you are trying to restart it at a second conveyance vehicle.

Yes, I am sorry for maybe describing it incorrectly. A feed wagon/feed cart with a horizontal auger that feeds to a vertical auger to fill feeders and such.

So if I read your answer correctly, even though this one feed wagon has been used for years, you don't think I am being foolish putting this guard over the uncovered auger.

And thanks for the response.

(quoted from post at 15:51:17 10/11/23) FYI, yellow bottom and galvanized top probably means it's a Knoedler brand.

You are exactly correct, could not come up with it when posting my original question.

So the Knoedler feed cart has the horizontal auger in the box covered with the angle iron. The GrainOVator's horizontal auger in the box isn't covered. Guess I am going to go ahead and build an angle iron cover over it. Thanks.
