How many shots of grease should I put in each zerk on my combine. I have always wondered this and the mechanics at Deere don't even have an answer.

That's because every zerk fitting is different depending on where it is. I just watch to see if grease is coming out at the bearing.

My general practice is grease until you see it coming out of the bearing somewhere, or hear the bearing "pop". Maybe it wastes some grease, but I haven't seen many bearings fail because of too much grease, especially on relatively low speeds like combine parts. I have done it this way for years and my 1940 Allis 60 is going strong after 67 years. Just my opinion,

Agree, would just add that if you are using a hand op gun as most of us are, don't need to blow the seals if you have several pumps going easy then she starts resistance. Likely means full of grease. BUT, if you have a zerk that won't take, better find out why. Don't assume because you can't pump gun hard enough to make it add any grease all is well. Doug

Your operator's manual should tell you how often and how much you should grease each fitting. When in doubt, three shots daily should do it.
