guessing what was wrong

Super M farmall left brake will work fine but pedal pushes hard and will not come back to rest at platform unless you manually pull it back. Right brake and clutch pedal all worked fine. No noise coming from transmission.

Remove jam nut on linkage at brake drum,9/16 wrench, then remove ball nut 7/8 wrench. If pedal still moves hard, then cross shaft is binding, if pedal moves freely then linkage inside brake housing is binding

I'd just oil up the cross shaft good and do it for a few times while using. IF it gets better you found it. If not then it is probably in the brake balls not letting it release right.

Kind of misleading you guys. This is something that happened years ago to a customer's tractor. That is where the what WAS wrong comes in.

I was a young pup. Customer just complaining about sticking brake. Started tearing into it and found nothing wrong with brake but the shaft was hard to turn. Took the whole transmission apart. Found nothing wrong but now it worked freely. Put it back together , drove it out. he comes to get it and takes off with it and ,whoa same problem. He was not happy.

Took it apart again, checked more carefully as I went. The lower transmission shaft was broke inside of one of the gears. It didn't break evenly so when put under load it spread out pushing the gear or rear bearing, can't remember which, against the brake pedal, clutch pedal shaft.

Apparently when I took it apart first time I moved the shaft back in to position by probably tapping on the coupler or bearing to get it apart and then everything was free and looked normal.

New shaft fixed her up. We of course lost all the labor on second time around but at least made a few bucks on the new shaft etc.

you had me stumped as to why you were asking us for info,... thought maybe a trick question.

As I got to know the guy over the years I would say he could test anything to it's limits, but that is just a guess as to why the shaft broke. Only one I ever saw or heard of.
