Gum Dipped vs. Not Gum Dipped

For example lets say I have access to a matched set of Firestone All Traction Field & Road F151"s in size 18.4x38. I can not see the gum dipped picture on the side of the tire in the picture I was sent. Does not being gum dipped make it softer or what was the purpose of gum dipping. Thanks, all responses appreciated!
 

I had a pair some time ago and was told that they ended the process around 1995 so they are available only as you find used ones. They will probably have sidewall cracks.
