Gunk problem?

I recently purchased a Jubilee. My first tractor. Have gotten great help from the forum. Did my first job with the brush hog. As I was finishing, I noticed that the motor was running cool. Had read in the forum that an engine running cold will gunk up. Since the po is no longer of this world, I will have to assume that it has been run this way for some time, and the motor is probably gunked up. I will install a thermostat right away, but need to know how to approach the potentially gunked motor problem. Thanks.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it until it [i:f3fadb32ee][b:f3fadb32ee]is[/b:f3fadb32ee][/i:f3fadb32ee] broke.
Does it have a thermostat? If not I would install one.
I would also make sure your gauge is accurate.
If you're worried about moisture in the oil, check it
and change it early until it is clean if needed.
Jubilees are great tractors. You're going to love it!

Do you know when the oil was last changed? I would install the thermostat, and possibly change the oil, but if the engine is running good I
wouldn't worry too much. Also, get yourself the I&T manual for your tractor. FO-19 I think is the manual for your tractor.
Good luck with your new machine!

First, confirm the coolant temp. You could just have a bad gauge.

Removing a t-stat in an N is easy (it's in the top hose) so it was a quick "fix" for an overheating engine. (and rarely was the t-stat the cause; see tip # 24). But the t-stat in your engine is in the gooseneck. If it does not have a t-stat, it needs one. (see tip # 25)

Re the gunk, change the oil & filter. (tip # 6)

That's all you need to do.

I think the gunk issue refers to diesels
more than a gasser.
A diesel that doesn't get run hard will
start to wet stack. Unburned fuel will
collect in the ex manifold and muffler and
ooze, drip, leak, spray, slobber oily black
gunk all over everything. They need to get
run hard regularly. On the 58-64 4 cylinder
Ford diesels they came standard with a 2
blade fan to get them to run a bit hotter.
It doesn't hurt them to slobber and they
will clear up/burn off all that stuff if you
go run the snot out of them for a while.

Running cool or not, if the oil and filter has been changed regularly, the engine is likely not badly contaminated.

When you install your thermostat look up Hobo for
some advice.
He had some years ago put out a tutorial about
installing the sensor at the front left head boss.
Did my 2N that way just for your info.
Not an expert on the Jube.
Welcome,
Greg
