H 12v Conversion

OK, I know this has been covered to DEATH and back......BUT..... I have a 1939 H that is ready to roll, except for the wiring. I would like to keep the button start (if possible) and convert to 12 volt. I have no idea what I am doing, so need help. I do NOT want to cut the hood, so want to use a small alternator. I have pushed this off for 2-3 years, so it is HIGH time to get it done!

I make and sell a kit for installing the Denso alternator on the Farmall H. The Denso is about 4 inches in diameter. When I sell a kit I will also provide support when my customer is installing on the tractor.

I have a 39 H as well. I got a new wiring harness and correct sized cables from Brillman. The Mag, 6 volt battery, generator, and starter are all stock. The tractor starts fast and has no need for 12 volts. If all of these things have been looked after, you shouldn't really need the 12 volts. Spending time on the components and some money on quality wiring should give you a nice starting tractor with the stock button.

Here is my thread from 7 or 8 years ago with my details and pics. No regrets at all in the route I went. I will say I eventually went back and cut some 3/8 scrap pile water pipe for spacers to replace the jam nuts I initially used but otherwise no regrets.

You will like have to copy and paste this to your web browser.

I've heard ONLY GREAT things about Charlie's Repair 12V conversion kits. And LOTS and LOTS of compliments on his kits and especially his great customer service. Both my tractors had 12V alternators from another source from many years ago, both were hard starters, but If I was converting them today I'd buy kits from Charlie.
IH was finding out that 6V was NOT enough to start a tractor with over-size high compression pistons, live hydraulic, and power steering, all things that greatly increase load on the starter when cranking the engine. IH used 12V systems on both diesel AND LP gas engines. Both my FARMALLS have Delco 10SI alternators, even the Super H and NO cutting of any sheetmetal was done. The '51 M with 4 M&W Add Power sleeves & pistons, and M&W live hyd pump, and Char-Lynn power steering with it's own pump & reservoir, it didn't start well at ALL on 6 volt. Super H is a stage 2, live hyd pump, no big pistons...yet, no PS, and it struggled to start in winter. I put BIG Group 65 Die-Hard Gold batteries in both my FARMALLS, they both start really good now.

If the bracket is angled downward some and a short belt you can mount a delco under the hood with no cutting. I did it on a 53 H. We use the original push button. The switch will make and break the connection on a 3 wire set up. We use the 31 battery with the stud tops and no fooling around with cleaning all the time easy to hook things u for additional electrical toys if wanted. Do use about a 6gage wire to the starter from the push button or you slam pretty hard into the flywheel teeth.
