H carb question....

Needed to use my H two days ago, to go give my uncle a yank & noticed right away that it didn't want to idle while sitting idle. I hopped off & checked the fuel & that was ok. Looked at the carb & the bottom was discolored. I've had this tractor a long time & haven't seen that before. Is it related to my idle issue or just coincidence? The electrical side of things was gone through before I planted corn & the H ran with no issue. It gets parked & now it is acting up?

Idling is the only issue so far. It pulled my uncle out just fine & has no hiccups once the engine is under the slightest load.

I do intend on pulling the carb at some point & going through it. Just curious, at this point, if the discoloration happened due to whatever is currently going on with it. The fuel tank is clean & kept clean religiously. You can eat off the bottom of it! The inlet on the bowl has a capped screen on it, so if there is crud in the carb, it's really fine & should clean out easy.

Usually if gas dribbles out, the bottom part by the fuel screw is wet. This is bone dry. Actually looks like it got hot?....

yup , that carburetor by the main Jet. What’s in that fuel oxidizers ? Winter fuel ?

It probably has the float too high, the inlet needle worn and not seating well enough to actually limit idle level flow, or the float is sinking from fuel in it. The light brown is evaporated fuel. The black above and on the gasket is tar like fuel residue from slow gasket leaks at the bowl. Needs a rebuild!! Jim

Ran a can of UNL88 through the tractor before the last refueling. Thinking that might have something to do with it. The H ran fine before that & has ran like poo since, even with the usual gas. Oddly enough, there were no problems burning the UNL88 while plowing, pulling the spring tooth or planting.

The float might explain why it's running a touch rich at the lower speeds regardless of adjustment.

Feels like it was just yesterday I did an overhaul on her & went through the carb. After some thought, it was done two years before I signed on the site here, so it was done 20 years ago.

This getting old thing is getting ridiculous.

Looks like it's carb refresh time. I just finished mine (less paint)

Thanks for posting that! Forgot I was going to look for the rebuild kit while it's raining today.

Did you make the bowl drain butterfly or is it repurposed from something else? It looks a bit on the big side.

That drain is the same as the one on the H carb I have sitting on my desk. I rebuilt it a number of years ago but never used it

MY JD B also has one of those on the carb on it and works very well for draining and checking gas flow into and out of the carb

It's handy when the engine is cold & floods. I can drain the carb & let a little fresh air in. Close the butterfly on the bowl, open the tank valve & it will usually start right away.

Seems like those drains are pretty common on tractors that were distillate or kerosene originally, allowed the low cost fuel to be drained out to start on fresh gas. Mike

They are. I added the one on my X1 H shortly after I got it, for ease of draining the bowl. That was before the overhaul. The kerosene & distillate H's here both came with it.
