H Carburetor

I am attempting to rebuild the carburetor on my '44 H. In the bottom port, there is some packing that was in really bad shape that I had to scrape out. The kit I bought has new packing, but the entire piece does not fit in and still allow me to put the fitting back in. Should I cut the packing down to a size that will fit? Probably a stupid question, but I'm trying to cover my bases.

Thanks,

Jim

That seals the main jet adjusting screw. Can you get the fitting started if you use a punch to pack it in? If not trim a little so you can.

I have encountered that same issue a few times myself. Apparently not ALL IH carbs were manufactured to the same degree of accuracy.

First, make absolutely certain that ALL of the old packing is out, and yes, digging and scraping is the ONLY way to remove it. 2nd, yes, the new packing CAN be trimmed down, but if you are not careful, that new packing will turn into crumbs right before you eyes. The trick is to slide the packing onto the load screw, and then use an exacto knife or a razor blade to very carefully slice just a little off the end. Don't worry about creating a taper because the packing will conform when you tighten down the packing nut. If the packing is still too long, slice off another thin slice.
