H choking itself!

Went to bush hog today and my 46 Farmall H is running so rough I couldn't ignore it.

Changed the plugs...
Readjusted the carb according to Farmall h manual (neighbor has one)...
Cleaned out the bottom wing nut adjustment.

It is choking it self. I have never seen this. And still runs rough.

I backed out the main fuel adjustment to where it was runing rich. So it's getting fuel. But it's still rough. Help!

give some adjustment settings, as who knows where u have the adjustments set at. how's the points setting? plug wires? and are the wires in order? how's the spark? did you check compression as that is the very first thing to do in diagnosing engine miss.
i am wondering why you back out main fuel adjustment when you say its choking its self?

I literally took the Farmall manual and copied it. I think it was tighten completely and then 2 turns on the idle and 2.5-:3 turns on the main fuel adjustment.

well that sounds better. i find idle screw seems to work best at 3/4-1 turn out. but dont matter it will not make it flood. you might have a heavy float, such as a hole in it. i would remove carb and soak in carb cleaner while checking float.

Are you sure the air intake is not plugged? I would disconnect it so you can see into the carburetor, then you can tell what is going on.
When you say it's choking it's self I assume it's running rich, that either means it's not getting enough air or it's getting too much fuel. Check to make sure the choke butterfly is working properly, that's the only way it can choke it'e self.

What makes you say its running rough because its choking its self? Are you getting a lot of black smoke. There aren't many ways a tractor can choke itself with too much fuel if it had been running OK. If the tractor isn't running does gas run out of the carb.Lots of reasons a tractor will run rough - fuel is only one of them.

That only lets it start. Let it warm up a few minutes, set the throttle wide open, turn the main jet screw in until the engine stumbles, then out until smooth and maybe one half more turn. If not smooth and it is due to the carb the carb needs cleaning. Other wise you have a spark problem.

Check for a hose to have come apart & block
the intake air.
Choke plate came off of shaft & blocking
air intake.
Check air cleaner bowl for build-up.
