A week or so ago I had asked a repair question and was told to purchase an owner"s manual and a service manual. A found the manuals on external_link. but have not purchased them as of yet. I am now looking for a recommendation on the best manuals to buy for a 1940 H tractor.

Also, the seller of this tractor informed me that the PTO was not turning. The tractor has not been running for 5 years. When I have the tractor in gear and the PTO is engaged, the PTO shaft continues to spin freely by hand. What would be the cause and do I need to order parts for the PTO?

Thank you again for your help and recommendations.

I bought my manuals form Binder Books and am well satisfied with the quality of reproduction printing that they do. I bought a couple of manuals from other sources and the print was not very clear and was hard to read.

i take it the tractor is not running when you engage the pto and you can turn it by hand. so there must be a coupler or spline that is worn out.you cant order parts till u pull it apart to see whats needed.

Could be a number of problems with that PTO. Broken shaft, coupler not doing its job or broken etc. As for books I-T manuals are good as are others but ALL of them leave out things.
Also since it has not run for 5 years the first thing I would do before doing any thing else is fill the cylinders with ATF so as to clean them up and lube the upper part of the engine. It also helps free up sticking rings and if you also pour some down the exhaust helps free up sticking valves. If you find you need some parts I have a 1940 H that is a parts tractor

Check out Binder...usually a little better on price and high quality. Owners/operators and service manual are the two I buy.

You also need a parts manual, or you can look at the parts section of www.caseih.com. You will need it to work on the PTO. As stated Binder Books has the best reproductions of the IH manuals, they are digital vs photocopies. I also find the I&T manual to be better than many parts of the IH service manuals -- it uses IH data and diagrams.

I have a 40 H that had the same problem and the drive cogs had broken off of the countershaft. I understand that this was a weak point and in about 41-42 the countershaft was changed from two cogs to I believe 6 or 8 splines. The pto assembly should pull out the back & you could get a look in there with a flashlite. I converted mine to the newer style with a Pto unit & countershaft from a 48. It was a big job to change the countershaft.

I would go with a parts book, the IH Service Manual (CHS-69), and an I&T manual. Both of the manuals assume that you know what you are doing and cover things from a slightly different perspective. Together they are more complete than either one by its self.

The 1939-1941 Pto were a diff design (weaker design) than the 42-5?. My 1940 has same problem. Need to change over to the newer style. Not a fun fix.
